The CEO’s Role in Communications: Six Considerations for Speaking Out

Research by The Conference Board found that an overwhelming majority of global business leaders believe that organizations should at least some of the time respond to social issues and events–for example, the war in Ukraine. With that in mind, what steps should CEOs be taking–and considering–to achieve the best possible outcome? Ivan Pollard, Leader of the Marketing & Communications Center, suggests the following six steps: 1) Strategically define the criteria that determine if you should speak out on a topic; 2) Creatively articulate how you will speak out on a topic; 3) Remember that your soundbites will turn into ‘soundbytes’; 4) Create a cadence that maintains both regularity and relevance; 5) Ensure your leadership team knows what you are saying; 6) Stay in character.
