How To Recognize and Treat Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

DKA is a serious complication of diabetes that can be life-threatening. DKA is most common among people with type 1 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes can also develop DKA.

Early symptoms of DKA include being very thirsty and urinating (peeing) a lot more than usual. If left untreated, more severe symptoms can appear quickly. These may include fast or deep breathing, fruity-smelling breath, stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting.
