Updated Brief Examines the Role of Social Determinants Such As
Socioeconomic Status, Education and Housing in Promoting Health and
Health Equity
Efforts to improve
health in the U.S. traditionally have looked to the health care system as the
key driver of health and health outcomes. There has been increased
recognition that improving health and achieving health equity require broader
approaches that address social, economic and environmental factors that
influence health.
An updated brief from the Kaiser Family Foundation
provides an overview of these social determinants of health -- factors like socioeconomic
status, education, housing, neighborhood and physical environment and social
support networks – as well as the emerging federal and state
initiatives to address them.
The brief, Beyond
Health Care: The Role of Social Determinants in Promoting Health and Health
Equity, is part of our broader work on disparities in health and health care in the U.S.
Filling
the need for trusted information on national health issues, the
Kaiser Family Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco,
California.
