UnitedHealth
Group Inc. on Friday announced a new CEO for UnitedHealthcare,
picking the No. 2 executive at its fast-growing Optum
subsidiary to lead its core health-insurance business.
The
Minnetonka-based insurance giant said that Dirk McMahon,
currently president and chief operating officer of Optum, will move into the CEO role at UnitedHealthcare. He replaces Steve Nelson,
who is retiring from the company.
Daniel Schumacher,
currently president and COO at UnitedHealthcare, will move into McMahon's role
at Optum, the company's health-services arm.
Andrew Witty remains
CEO at Optum.
Nelson,
59, took over the top role at UnitedHealthcare,
which manages UnitedHealth Group's insurance and benefits operations, about two
years ago. The role is one of the highest-profile executive jobs at
Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH); Nelson's
compensation totaled $9.8 million last year.
“We are deeply grateful to Steve Nelson for
his 15 years of service – each day over those years Steve brought a sharp focus
on our members, the providers who care for them and our colleagues who support
them – all with the highest level of integrity. We are a better company as a
result of his service, and he is leaving at a time of strength in the
business,” said UnitedHealth Group CEO Dave Wichmann in
a statement.
