WellCare Celebrates 50 Years of Pride

By Mike Radu
This month, the nation celebrates Pride Month, but this year is particularly special as we recognize the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. This dark period in our history became the catalyst for the modern movement for LGBTQ+ equality in the United States and around the world, and WellCare associates are proud to join in and show their true colors of diversity and inclusion.
To mark this momentous year, we proudly display Pride flags at our corporate campuses in both Tampa and Detroit. Additionally, our leaders and associates are participating in Pride celebrations and parades around the country, including Detroit, Mich.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Roselle Park, N.J.; and in New York City. Additionally, WellCare was recognized by the Tampa Bay Business Journal in their 2019 Business of Pride feature. This feature celebrates LGBTQ+ business leaders, companies, allies and advocates in the Tampa Bay area making a difference in the corporate world.

As an ally and executive sponsor of the LGBTQ+ Associate Resource Group (ARG), I am proud WellCare has made a strong commitment to attracting and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.
In 2017, Ken Burdick, signed a pledge called the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusionwith other CEOs around the country to make a difference in the workplace. At that time, he committed to WellCare that we would take action and create a workplace where everyone could bring their full selves to work each day.

I am particularly proud of our work with Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). This index measures how inclusive a company is in supporting civil liberties. Although we have more work to do, we were honored to receive a score of 100%. This achievement makes WellCare a “Best Place to Work for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Equality.”
But we won’t let up on this momentum because it makes a real difference. According to WellCare’s 2018 Associate Opinion Survey, 90% of associates agreed “People of all backgrounds (cultural, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation) can succeed at WellCare.

While publicly celebrating our WellCare associates, providers and members, who represent diverse backgrounds and experiences, remains absolutely important, it’s every day when we put our commitment to diversity and inclusion into action that really counts.
This is just the beginning of our journey as we continue to promote diversity and inclusion among our associates, our members and the communities we serve.
