Groundbreaking Held for Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home Expansion

Perry Reid President and Partner Ben Velinsky, Veterans Homes’ Board Chair Jim Cada, NDVA Director John Hilgert, Governor Pete Ricketts, ENVH Administrator Matt Bauman, and DAS Director Jason Jackson dig with shovels at the site of the expansion for the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home.

State leaders and veterans’ home members kicked off the construction of an expansion to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home (ENVH) with a groundbreaking ceremony in Bellevue on March 29th. Currently, ENVH is just over 120,000 square feet, with 120 licensed beds grouped in four wings: two 30-bed skilled nursing care wings, 30 assisted living beds, and 30 beds for skilled dementia care. The expansion, which will add nearly 25,000 square feet to the facility, will create rooms for 30 new skilled nursing beds and replace 30 semi-private assisted living beds with 24 private assisted living beds at the facility, bringing the total number of beds to 144. In addition, it will provide space to expand services to include an adult day health care program, a new level of service not currently offered by NDVA.

Construction of the expansion is scheduled to be completed by summer 2023, with the total project cost coming in at $9.4 million. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is providing grant funding to pay for 65% of the cost, with the other 35% coming from funds allocated by the Nebraska Legislature in 2019 at the request of Governor Ricketts.

Also on March 29th was the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial Groundbreaking in Papillion.

State Service Office Virtual Claims Clinic Results in over $600,000 Paid to Nebraska Veterans

A person types on the computer while a web graphic hovers in front of them.

From March 1st through 3rd, NDVA’s State Service Office hosted a virtual claims clinic to assist veterans and veteran spouses with claims submitted to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. A total of 168 claims were submitted and reviewed as part of the clinic. Of those, 44 were able to be reviewed and closed, resulting in $618,264 in retroactive benefits paid to Nebraska veterans or family members. The remaining claims have been moved forward in the review process, with many requiring additional information, paperwork, or doctor exams.

A virtual claims clinic allows accredited veteran service officers to work directly with the VA to expedite the decision-making process on already submitted claims. Another virtual claims clinic is planned for early summer and an in-person clinic is planned for mid-summer. When the dates are finalized for the claims clinics, veterans who have a pending claim can contact their county veteran service officer (CVSO) or the NDVA State Service Office to have their claims reviewed and possibly expedited. Veterans who do not have pending claims but feel they might be eligible for benefits should contact their CVSO or the NDVA State Service Office.

To get in touch with the NDVA State Service Office, visit the State Service Office Website or call (402) 420-4021. Contact information for CVSOs can be found at the link below.
