Health coverage gaps linked to increased mortality risks
A study in JAMA Health Forum found adults with private insurance
were less likely to experience health care coverage disruptions than publicly
insured adults, but these coverage gaps were linked to greater mortality risk
for both adults with private and public health insurance compared with
continuous coverage. The findings, based on National Health Interview Survey
data involving more than 294,000 adults, "suggest that assessment of prior
insurance coverage disruptions may be an important addition to social risk
screening in clinical practice," researchers noted.
