CMS seeks to expedite Medicare coverage of new devices

The CMS has a proposed a rule that would expedite the Medicare coverage approval process for medical devices that receive a breakthrough designation from the FDA. Under the Medicare Coverage of Innovative Technology proposal, Medicare would allow four years of national coverage for FDA-designated breakthrough devices, starting on the day market authorization is awarded, and the new rules would extend to devices approved in 2019 and 2020.
