Retinal amyloid tied to brain changes in Alzheimer's

Researchers found a significant and inverse association between retinal amyloid count and hippocampal volume, especially in the proximal mid-periphery, among older adults with cognitive decline, with those having amnestic mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease having significantly elevated retinal amyloid count and area in the proximal mid-periphery, compared with those with normal cognition. The findings, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring, suggest that retinal amyloid screening may help identify the earliest symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, said researcher Dr. Maya Koronyo-Hamaoui.
