Dallas-based Baylor Scott &
White Health plans to lay off more than 700 workers by March 1, according to a
notice submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission.
The health system plans to lay off 711 workers from the Baylor Scott &
White Medical Center in Garland and 105 workers connected to Aramark,
a food service provider to the hospital. In a statement, however, Baylor Scott &
White said it expects to offer most of those workers other positions within the
health system.
"Baylor Scott &
White has approximately 48,000 employees, and we currently have close to 2,000
open positions," the company said in a statement. "Therefore, we are
optimistic that we will be able to place within our system the majority of the
employees impacted by the closure."
The company cited financial trouble with its Garland hospital.
"After several significant changes to the offerings
at Baylor Scott &
White Medical Center – Garland over the past few years, and after looking for a
new owner for the facility, we have made the difficult decision to close the
hospital," the company said in a prepared statement. "The last day of
operations is projected for February 28, 2018."
The company pointed to other health care competitors in Garland
that patients can now access, reducing their need for a Baylor Scott &
White-branded hospital.
"Garland residents now have a number of recently opened
healthcare options including freestanding emergency departments, urgent care
and surgery centers, and other hospitals in the area," the company said.
The company said most of its outpatient locations and services
in Garland will not be affected.
