Spotlight on Social Security

When you think about government benefits, Social Security programs may come to mind. Our Partner, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), is responsible for benefits focusing on health and financial stability. The SSA administers retirement, disability, and survivor’s benefits to eligible individuals and their families. Benefits.gov offers information on Social Security programs including general descriptions, eligibility requirements, program contact information, and steps for how to apply. Visit our U.S. Social Security Administration category for a complete listing of the Social Security benefits on our site.
The SSA website is a comprehensive resource for all matters related to Social Security. Their Benefits Planner helps interested users better understand Social Security protection options to plan for their financial future. The Benefits Planner also includes a calculators section to help estimate important values from retirement age to expected earnings and spousal benefits.
On the Benefits Planner: Retirement page, users can find out when and how to apply for retirement benefits, as well as factors that may affect their retirement. The page also includes fact sheets, checklists, and information on Medicare.
Disability benefits are paid under the Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) and the Supplemental Security Income program (SSI). The Benefits Planner: Disability section helps users discover available disability benefits, eligibility standards, and how to apply. This page also provides insight into the approval process, and what recipients should know about receiving benefits.
Social Security also offers survivors benefits to protect families who are affected by the death of a wage earner. The Benefits Planner: Survivors section provides information for those planning for their survivors, or for survivors themselves, on eligibility and how to apply for benefits. In addition, the planner features survivors’ publications and resources to estimate benefit amounts.
Through our partnership with the SSA, we’re proud to offer the SSA Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool (BEST). Users are encouraged to complete the questionnaire to determine their eligibility for Social Security benefits. Based on the answers to the questionnaire, the tool will list benefits you may be eligible for, along with information about how to apply.
If you or your loved ones have further questions related to Social Security benefits, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page on the SSA website, or call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7p.m. ET. You can also use the Social Security Office Locator to find and contact your local Social Security office.
