FDA execs: Medical manufacturing must return to US
The COVID-19 pandemic is an overdue reminder for the US government
to bring back medical manufacturing in the country, FDA Commissioner Stephen
Hahn and Deputy Commissioner for Medical and Scientific Affairs Anand Shah
write in an opinion piece. The consequences of the country's heavy reliance on
foreign firms have been evident during the pandemic, from the fast depletion of
the strategic national stockpile to shortages of medical supplies and drugs,
but the government can take steps to address this crisis by incentivizing
manufacturers to return to the US and investing in novel technologies that can
address acute spikes in demand during emergency situations, among other steps,
they wrote.
