A cloth mask alone may be adequate protection from COVID-19
outdoors, but Linsey Marr, who studies airborne virus transmission, says she is
now wearing her best mask whenever she is indoors at a store or anywhere else
where fresh air flow may be restricted. National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci has recommended wearing two masks,
and Marr says a cloth mask over a surgical mask helps ensure a snug fit and
boosts the protective value of both, but a third mask can restrict breathing
and may be counterproductive.
