Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island

Map of plans for the proposed Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island. Shows the positions of the flag assembly, administration and maintenance buildings, memorial area, and committal shelter.

Work continues on the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island, with planning and fundraising efforts underway. The new cemetery would include the existing cemetery adjacent to the former Grand Island Veterans’ Home and would expand on it to include administrative and maintenance buildings, an open-air shelter, a flag assembly area, and memorial walk, along with other features. NDVA Director John Hilgert and Hall County Veteran Service Officer Don Shuda presented the proposal for the new cemetery to the Hall County Commissioners, where they also discussed the funding for it. While the cemetery would be federally funded, 10% of the funding must be contributed up front by the community. The Hall County Hero Flight Association is currently raising the funds needed to make that initial investment.
