Open House for Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island Hosted June 28

Governor Ricketts, center, poses for a picture with numerous State Senators and Veteran leaders in Nebraska celebrating the passage of Legislative Bill 387.

An open house was hosted for the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island project on June 28th. Members from the project team—including NDVA teammates, the Hall County Hero Flight Association, the NVCGI Community Advisory Committee, and the consultant team—were on hand to share the vision for the cemetery and answer community members’ questions. For those who were unable to attend, some of the meeting materials are available here:

Women Veterans Day

June 12 is observed annually as Women Veterans Day. On June 12, 1948 President Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. military. To commemorate Women Veterans Day, Governor Ricketts issued a proclamation honoring Nebraska’s women service members and veterans and declaring June 12, 2021 Women Veterans Day in Nebraska.

Last year, USVA photographer Gene Russell traveled to Lincoln to photograph Nebraska’s women veterans as part of “I Am Not Invisible”, a project by the VA's Center for Women Veterans which seeks to highlight the contributions and experiences of women veterans. Memorial Day Across NDVA

NDVA’s four veterans’ homes and the state veterans cemetery were all able to hold Memorial Day ceremonies this year. Over 200 people attended the Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony in Alliance, where Cemetery Manager Jim Goodwin read the names of those who have passed since the last recognition in 2019, and placed a wreath on the unfinished grave to pledge continued service to veterans and their families. The ceremonies at the veterans’ homes still looked a little different than they normally would, but they were able to have ceremonies with local American Legion Posts, musical entertainment, and guest speakers. Each facility found unique ways to honor those we have lost, and we are grateful to our teammates as well as members of the community who work to make these events possible.
