Happy 112th
Birthday to Army Veteran Lawrence Brooks
Happy
birthday to the nation’s oldest WWII Veteran! Lawrence Brooks, a
patient at VA New Orleans, marked his 112th birthday on September 12.
Brooks
received the hospital’s 20,000th COVID-19 vaccine. After the
injection, Brooks was overjoyed, exclaiming, “I finally got it!”
His
advice to those who ask his secret to longevity: “Serve God and be
nice to people.”
VA supports providers who
help prevent Veteran suicide
VA
is committed to supporting community health care providers who
treat Veterans at risk for suicide through the Suicide Risk
Management Consultation Program or SRM.
This
program offers free consultation, support, education and resources
that promote best practices to providers working with Veterans at
risk for suicide.
“We
want all providers to feel supported and confident in their
treatment decisions," says Georgia Gerard, an SRM team expert.

Finding a new voice after cancer
After
battling throat cancer and undergoing a life-changing surgery to
remove his voice box, Army Veteran Arthur Daniels found a new
voice.
Daniels
got his voice back when his surgeon placed a small opening between
the trachea and the esophagus. VA offers Veterans a range of
devices to help them communicate.
"I
tell other Veterans that it will be fine,” says Daniels. “We just
drive on.”
