Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a monthly update of data that provides a snapshot of the impact of COVID-19 on the Medicare population. The updated data show over 4.9 million COVID-19 cases among the Medicare population and over 1.3 million COVID-19 hospitalizations. The updated snapshot covers the period from January 1, 2020 to August 21, 2021. It is based on Medicare Fee-for-Service claims and Medicare Advantage encounter data CMS received by September 17, 2021.

In addition, CMS released a new supplemental COVID-19 Hospitalizations Trend Report that highlights trends in hospitalization rates over the same time period cut by month and various demographic characteristics.
