The Omicron BA.2 subvariant now accounts for more than half
of all COVID-19 cases in New England, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. The variant accounted for 55.4 percent of
cases in New England as of Saturday, the CDC said.
The CDC's new data come as scientists are concerned the variant will cause an uptick in
COVID-19 cases in the United States in the next few
weeks.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said over the
weekend that while the subvariant is likely to cause
a rise in cases, he doesn't anticipate that it will amount to
another surge.
