Fact Sheet Summaries Evidence on the Health Implications of Separating and Detaining Families at the Border
A fact sheet from the Kaiser Family Foundation summarizes the research on the health implications of separating and detaining families at the border.

The research shows that separating children from their parents exposes them to trauma and toxic stress that can have lifelong impacts on their physical, mental, and behavioral health. Being held in detention, even for brief periods, can give rise to depression and post-traumatic stress, suicidal thoughts, developmental delays and behavioral issues.

In recent months, the Trump Administration policy of zero tolerance for individuals entering the U.S. without authorization has led to the separation of thousands of children from parents when authorities place adults in criminal custody. First released last week, the brief has been updated to reflect a federal judge’s order to halt most family separations and reunify families that have been separated, as well as President Trump’s executive order to detain immigrant families together while their cases are processed.
