Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) released an annual update to the Hospital Cost Report Public
Use File (Hospital Cost Report PUF) with data for 2015. The Hospital Cost
Report PUF is a streamlined, easier to use version of the cost report data
submitted by Medicare-certified hospitals. The PUF is organized at the
hospital-level and includes select facility characteristics, utilization
measures, cost and charges by cost center (in total and for Medicare),
Medicare settlement data, and financial statement data.
The 2015 Hospital Cost Report PUF has
information for 6,257 facilities, including all hospital facility types, and
all payers. It covers 34 million discharges, 182 million days, $909 billion
in net revenue and $939 billion in operating expenses. In addition to releasing
data for 2015, the 2014 PUF has been updated to include the most recent cost
report filings.
The Hospital Cost Report PUF makes it easy to
examine a wide variety of financial and utilization metrics for a given
hospital and compare those data to hospitals with similar characteristics
(e.g., geographic location or size). Since the PUF now contains two years of
cost report data (2014 and 2015), it is also possible to look at how these
metrics changed from one year to another.

of the above data assets are also catalogued on Healthdata.gov: http://www.healthdata.gov/dataset/search
