Racial gaps in prostate cancer mortality examined

Black patients with prostate cancer who underwent radical prostatectomy had 51% higher mortality rates, compared with white patients, but the gap drops to 30% after accounting for educational attainment, insurance status and median household income, according to a study in the journal Cancer. "We hope our study findings can enhance public awareness that the racial survival difference, particularly between Black and white prostate patients, can be narrowed by erasing the racial inequities in socioeconomic status and health care," said researcher Wanqing Wen, M.D.
