A federal program aimed at ensuring uninsured Americans won't
have to pay large medical bills for COVID-19 treatment could be falling short
on some of its promises. In April, the Trump administration said it would use
money earmarked for hospitals in a $2.2 trillion coronavirus rescue package
to cover COVID-19 treatment for uninsured patients. At the time, HHS
Secretary Alex Azar said under the measure, providers aren't supposed to bill
uninsured Americans for the cost of COVID-19 care, and providers would be
reimbursed at Medicare rates for treating uninsured COVID-19 patients.
