During Malnutrition Awareness Week™ the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition organizes a series of events to educate healthcare
professionals and the public about the importance of including nutrition in
assessing and managing the health of individuals.
We know that nutrition plays a
critical role in community living as we age. Good nutrition can help older
adults stave off many illnesses, avoid or shorten hospital stays, and remain
active and independent. We also know that there are a number of
challenges to maintaining good nutrition, and far too many older adults are at
risk of malnutrition.
This year, for Malnutrition Awareness
Week™, we took a look at the unique nutrition challenges faced by family
caregivers. ACL’s National Nutritionist Judy Simon created these two articles
for caregivers – one with tips for taking care of their own nutrition needs,
and one with strategies for helping ensure their loved ones are eating well.
These pieces are part of ACL’s small
(but growing!) library of
ready-to-publish articles that
can be used in publications (including websites) to help connect older adults,
people with disabilities, and families and caregivers to resources that support
community living. We invite you to share these articles with colleagues
and friends, post them on social media, and include them in newsletters or
other publications.
