Two nonprofit health systems, Salt Lake City's Intermountain Healthcare and Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health this week announced...

...plans to merge. The combined organization would operate 70 hospitals, 435 clinics and provide health insurance to more than 1 million people. Intermountain operates Utah's largest insurer, SelectHealth, which currently enrolls 32.1% of the state's overall insurance market with 786,275 lives. SelectHealth also has a presence in Idaho and Nevada. Sanford, meanwhile, operates Sanford Health Plan, an insurer with 200,515 members in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Executives at both companies said they expect the deal to close by the third quarter of 2021.
