Drug shortages prompt calls to onshore production
Opiates, sedatives and paralytics needed for severely ill patients
with COVID-19 have been in short supply in the US at various times throughout
the pandemic, though manufacturers, wholesalers and group purchasing
organizations have worked to meet demand. Chronic supply problems plagued
generic injectable drugs before the pandemic, and material shortages have
hindered COVID-19 vaccine production, prompting a growing chorus of calls to
diversify supply chains and manufacture more finished drugs and raw materials
outside of China and India.
