White House considers vaccine
passports |
The
Biden administration is working on creating a set of standards for people to
prove they've been vaccinated against Covid-19, according to an
administration official. Multiple federal agencies are involved in the
conversations and passport planning with the White House. While
the White House says there will be no federal mandate to have a vaccination
credential or passport, they expect employers and the private sector to drive
use of “vaccine
passports.” The
standards are still in the early stages of the development, but White House
officials say that the final product will be free, private and safe from
being duplicated or forged. President
Joe Biden has predicted that life in the US could be back to normal by
Christmas, and as more Americans are vaccinated each day, these "vaccine
passports" could be key to a return to normalcy. Some
sectors, meanwhile, like the travel industry, have clamored for a uniform
system. Governments around the world may seek proof of vaccinations before
travelers can enter their borders again. Several
companies and technology groups have already begun developing smartphone apps
or systems for people to upload details of their Covid-19 tests and
vaccinations, creating digital credentials that could be shown in order to
enter concert venues, stadiums, movie theaters, offices or even countries. |
