Today, the Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services (CMS) released our annual update to the Medicare &
Medicaid Spending by Drug datasets with data for 2020. The datasets focus on
average spending per dosage unit for prescription drugs in the Medicaid,
Medicare Part B, and Medicare Part D programs, and track the change in
average spending per dosage unit over time. Information is also presented in
an interactive web-based tool and visualizations in the form of data
dashboards, so researchers and consumers can easily sort the data to identify
trends. The 2020 data and all previous years of the
Medicare & Medicaid Spending by Drug data are available from the links
below. Medicare Part D Spending by
Drug The Medicare Part D Spending by Drug data
presents spending information for drugs paid through the Medicare Part D
Prescription Drug program (generally drugs that patients administer
themselves). Medicare Part D Spending by Drug Medicare Part B Spending by
Drug The Medicare Part B Spending by Drug data
presents drug spending information for drugs paid through the Medicare Part B
program (generally drugs administered in doctors’ offices and other
outpatient settings). Medicaid Spending by Drug The Medicaid Spending by Drug data presents
spending information for covered outpatient drugs paid for by State Medicaid
agencies. In addition, CMS released our annual update
to the Medicare Part B
Discarded Drug Units Report with data for 2020. CMS requires
all physicians, hospitals, and other providers submitting Medicare Part B
drugs claims to report any discarded amount of a single use vial or other
single use package drug on its claim for reimbursement. This report presents
data on spending for discarded drug units covered under Medicare Part B. To view the Drug Spending Dashboards and
