Why it matters: Researchers found that 86% of dog owners who
participated in the Italy-based study said they noticed behavior in their pets
that resembled grieving, such as loss of appetite and lack of desire to play,
after a fellow canine in the household died. Study authors said they were
unsure if the dogs were actually experiencing grief or if they were just thrown
off by the disruption to their daily routines, but they added that
understanding this dynamic better could help owners be more attuned to their
four-legged friends' emotional needs.
