When
Nicki Hackman experienced abdominal pain and nausea, she and her husband,
Rick, never expected a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. They had been
getting ready for retirement and a new phase of life that included travel
and time with friends and relatives.
Instead, Nicki endured several months of chemotherapy and radiation in
preparation for surgery to remove her tumor.
Throughout the difficult months of Nicki’s treatment, Rick and Nicki took
the advice of friends to heart, celebrating each day they had together and
recognizing the joy in their lives.
“During the break from chemo, we decided to visit the Field of Dreams site
made famous by the movie,” Rick said. “We had been there before, only this
time, we had only one wish to pray for – successful treatment of Nicki’s
cancer.”
Two days before Christmas in 2021, surgery successfully removed the tumor
and subsequent scans showed no evidence of cancer.
“We found PanCAN immensely helpful - a PanCAN Patient Services case manager
sent a list of resources and possible clinical trials. We also read many
inspiring stories of long-term pancreatic cancer survivors on the
website...PanCAN’s work is clearly saving lives.”
