Monitoring Florida’s coronavirus case surge: These are the numbers to watch.

JUN 30, 2020 AT 10:56 AM
South Florida, home to 29% of Florida’s population, accounts for about 42% of cases with 80,453 total. That includes 4,589 new cases reported Saturday among Miami-Dade (44,729), Broward (19,575), and Palm Beach (16,149) counties.
South Florida’s reported deaths on Saturday rose by 12 for a total of 1,988, about 54% of the state’s total.
On Friday, President Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of thousands of Americans at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, despite public health guidelines that recommend not gathering in large groups.
Most were were not wearing masks, the Associated Press reported.
Nearly 2.8 million people have been infected with coronavirus in the US, and over 129,000 have died.
Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke at the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Stimulation alongside Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday.
Just hours after the state recorded a record of 10,109 cases, the governor said the state is “in a much better place to deal with” the surge in coronavirus numbers.
“I don’t think anyone predicted a Sun Belt resurgence in mid-June, but we had the infrastructure in place,” DeSantis said.
But officials across the state are concerned the spike in cases will overwhelm hospitals.
Larry Antonucci, CEO of the Lee County healthcare system, said the curve is no longer flat, Southwest Florida’s WBBH/WZVN-NBC2 reported.
Antonucci told NBC2 Lee Health is at risk of “hitting critical mass,” and urged the community to take action to reduce the spread of the virus and reduce the hospitalization rate.
