7 months and 6 million cases

It has now been almost seven months since the United States confirmed its first case of Covid-19 -- and yesterday, we hit yet another grim milestone. There have now been at least 6 million cases of coronavirus confirmed in the United States.

It’s astonishing to think about how we got to that number. It took the country 99 days to reach 1 million cases on April 28. But it only took 15 days to go from 3 million to 4 million cases, and 22 days to go from 5 million to 6 million cases.

If you look at the rest of the world, only two other countries have more than 1 million confirmed Covid-19 cases: Brazil, with roughly 3,862,000 cases; and India, with 3,621,000 cases.

But we must move forward. The science surrounding this pandemic has been moving at breakneck speeds, but for all researchers have learned, there’s still so much more to understand.

Here's what's we know so far about who is impacted by the virus, how the virus is controlled, and where the global race for treatments and vaccines stands.
