Why humans sleep changed at around age 3
Why it matters: Researchers say what the human brain is doing
while sleeping changes dramatically at a very young age. The brain uses sleep
to grow and build new connections until humans reach about 2 and a half years
of age. After that point, the brain shifts into maintenance mode and uses sleep
to clean and repair how it operates. This helps explain why babies and young
toddlers often sleep so soundly.
