Each Memorial Day, we as a nation are reminded of the heavy cost of freedom. From the militia members who took a stand against the world’s most feared army at Concord and Lexington, to the bloody shores of Omaha Beach, to the scorching deserts of Iraq, and every conflict in between, Americans have always prided themselves on placing their own self-interests behind the good of the nation in the form of military service...

Remembering and Honoring the Fallen

Memorial Day is the most solemn of all American holidays. Of all the days that celebrate Veterans, it is the toughest and most difficult day. It’s not fun and lighthearted, like November 11's Veterans Day, which celebrates all those who serve the country by signing up to protect her. It’s not bold and exciting like Armed Forces Day, which celebrates all those who serve the country in any of the six Armed Forces.

Memorial Day is sad. All those we celebrate on that day are gone, and they are gone because they served this country. It means flag-draped coffins. It means tears and a twenty-one-gun salute. It means a folded flag handed to a loved one, and at its essence, loss...

Meet Havana Schmidt, U.S. Army Veteran

Havana Schmidt of Fredericksburg received her official appointment to attend the US Military Academy at West Point in 2010. She graduated in 2014 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. 

She went on to attend the Airborne School in Fort Benning, GA, and Cadet Field Training, before being assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii...
