Memorial Day
is the most solemn of all American holidays. Of all the days that
celebrate Veterans, it is the toughest and most difficult day.
It’s not fun and lighthearted, like November 11's Veterans Day, which
celebrates all those who serve the country by signing up to protect
her. It’s not bold and exciting like Armed Forces Day, which celebrates
all those who serve the country in any of the six Armed Forces.
Memorial Day is sad. All those we celebrate on that day are gone,
and they are gone because they served this country. It means
flag-draped coffins. It means tears and a twenty-one-gun salute. It
means a folded flag handed to a loved one, and at its essence, loss...
