Though nationwide vaccinations have slowed coronavirus death rates, the country's death toll continues to grow, hitting 600,000 today, according to Johns Hopkins University. The number is approximately the same as the number of people in the United States who died from cancer in 2019. The number of daily COVID-19 deaths has declined rapidly in recent weeks, with an average of about 340 deaths a day currently, down from over 3,400 in mid-January.
