The use of temporary providers (or locum tenens) in the
medical field is nothing new, but D CEO's Will Maddox says that the
pandemic has fueled an even greater reliance on temporary physicians, nurse
practitioners, and physician assistants in the last year.
According to a 2022 survey from AMN Healthcare, 88 percent of
healthcare facilities have used locum tenens providers to address staffing
shortages in the last 12 months.
And while these positions give flexibility, they also bring added
costs to healthcare systems, who pay more per hour for temporary jobs like
traveling nurses than employed staff.
On Thursday, Children's Health CEO Chris Durovich, Baylor
Scott and White Health CEO Peter McCanna, and Steward Health Care System
President Sanjay Shetty will sit down with Will to discus staffing issues in
the latest D CEO Healthcare Breakfast Panel.
