Keep wild rodents out of your home

Healthy Pets, Healthy People

Prevent rodent infestations

Wild rodents like rats, mice, and chipmunks can spread many germs. Having rodents in and around your home can put you and your pets at risk for getting sick from rodent-borne diseases. Use the tips below to prevent rodent infestations and keep you, your family, and your pets healthy.

Learn how to identify signs of rodents

  • Look for droppings and gnaw marks. These are common signs that rodents have been present.
  • Droppings are common in cabinets, drawers, and other areas out of plain sight.

Seal gaps, holes, and food sources

  • Look for gaps inside your home. Look under and behind kitchen cabinets; around doors and windows; and in the attic and basement or crawlspace.
  • Look for gaps outside too. Look in the roof among rafters, gables, eaves, and soffits and around vents and holes for electrical, plumbing, and other lines.
  • Seal any gaps and holes you find.
  • Keep human and pet food sealed up and keep areas in and outside your home clean to avoid attracting rodents.

Set traps

  • If you see evidence of rodents, set traps throughout your home. Set them in areas where you’ve seen rodents, droppings, or gnaw marks.
  • Check traps daily and dispose of dead rodents immediately.
  • Keep traps out of reach of kids and pets.
