WellCare Could Boost Part D Lives More Than 200% With Aetna Deal

WellCare Health Plans, Inc. stands to increase its national stand-alone Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) market share from 4% to nearly 13% with its pending acquisition of Aetna Inc.’s Part D products. The DOJ said on Oct. 10 that it would approve CVS Health Corp.’s acquisition of Aetna contingent upon Aetna divesting its PDP business to WellCare. The WellCare divestiture could ease lingering antitrust fears about the Aetna-CVS Health deal. Aetna currently has 2,161,184 PDP enrollees, to WellCare’s 1,026,382.
