CMS Updates Part D Prescriber PUF and Opioid
Prescribing Mapping Tools with 2017 Data
Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) released an update to the Medicare Part D Prescriber Public
Use File (PUF), the Medicare Part D Opioid Prescribing Mapping Tool, and the
Medicaid Opioid Prescribing Mapping Tool with data for 2017.
The Medicare Part D Prescriber PUF includes
summarized information on prescription drugs that were prescribed by
individual physicians and other health care providers and paid for under the
Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program in 2017. The data include the
specific medications prescribed and statistics on utilization and costs
organized by the prescriber National Provider Identifier (NPI), drug name
(brand name in the case of trademarked drugs), and generic name. The PUF
provides data on more than one million distinct health care providers who
collectively prescribed $155 billion in prescription drugs under the Part D
program in 2017. To view the 2017 data see: https://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems/Statistics-Trends-and-Reports/Medicare-Provider-Charge-Data/PartD2017.html.
The Medicare Part D Opioid Prescribing
Mapping Tool is an interactive, web-based visualization resource that
presents geographic comparisons of opioid prescribing rates at the state,
county, and ZIP code levels. The Medicaid Opioid Prescribing Mapping Tool is
an interactive, web-based visualization resource that presents geographic
comparisons at the state level of Medicaid opioid prescribing rates. In
Medicare Part D, the opioid prescribing rate has decreased from 5.3% in 2016
to 5.1% in 2017. In the Medicaid program, the opioid prescribing rate
decreased from 5.4% in 2016 to 4.6% in 2017. The opioid prescribing
mapping tools are available at: https://go.cms.gov/opioidheatmap
