MD
Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and Holy Redeemer Health System signed a
letter of intent Friday to develop a joint cancer program at Holy Redeemer
Hospital in eastern Montgomery County.
The
agreement will expand the reach of Cooper University Health Care’s partnership
with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the leading cancer centers in
the country.
Financial
terms of the agreement are being kept confidential.
The
Philadelphia Business Journal first reported exclusively in
late 2016 and again last year on
the discussion taking place between the health care providers.
"This
partnership provides our integrated cancer care team with the opportunity to
bring a higher level of cancer care to the communities we serve today and in
the future at Holy Redeemer," said Michael Laign, president and CEO of Holy
Redeemer Health System.
In a
2016 interview, Laign said that Holy Redeemer was looking to enhance its cancer
program and believed MD Anderson had the best approach to "very
coordinated, very integrated cancer care that includes the latest protocols and
treatments.”
Under
the proposed partnership, MD Anderson at Cooper’s clinical experts will be
based at Holy Redeemer and provide a wide range of cancer services using MD
Anderson treatment protocols. In addition, doctors at MD Anderson at Cooper in
Camden will provide clinical oversight of the cancer program at the Holy
Redeemer campus and beyond. Patients at the Holy Redeemer Hospital will have
access to the integrated, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care available
at MD Anderson at Cooper. Those services include radiation oncology, medical
and surgical oncology, infusion, and diagnostic imaging.
George E. Norcross, III, chairman of Cooper's
Board of Trustees at Cooper, said Cooper's agreement with Holy Redeemer
"expands our partnership with one of the nation’s leading cancer centers,
MD Anderson, so that more patients in the region will have access to a higher
level of cancer care.”
The MD
Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper opened in 2013. The center also has South
Jersey locations in Voorhees, Willingboro and Egg Harbor Township.
Holy
Redeemer rival Abington-Jefferson Health opened an $80 million outpatient
cancer center in Willow Grove one year ago.
