The number of new COVID-19 cases and deaths in the US declined
last week to an average of 41,000 new cases and 900 fatalities per day, but
several states in the Midwest are reporting spikes in new infections and
testing positivity rates. The country's overall testing positivity rate
declined for the fourth straight week to 5.8% from 6.3% the previous week, but
at least 25 states still recorded positivity rates above 5%, led by Iowa at
24%, South Dakota at 23% and North Dakota at 20%.
