Survey: 10% of older adults got a pandemic pet
The National Poll on Healthy Aging, from the University of
Michigan's Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, found 10% of people
age 50 to 80 got a new pet during the COVID-19 pandemic months of March 2020 to
January 2021, while 59% in this group were pet owners. "It's well
documented that pets can help lower our blood pressure, ease anxiety and
improve symptoms of depression," said Wendy Welch of the Humane Society of
Huron Valley in Michigan.
