Stroke mortality rates higher among Black patients
A study presented at an American Stroke Association conference
found Black patients who were hospitalized for an ischemic stroke had a 4%
higher risk of dying within the next 10 years compared with people of other
races. The findings, based on data from 740,000 Medicare beneficiaries, showed
stroke-related mortality risk among Black patients began to climb slightly in
the first year after stroke relative to people of other races, and the
disparity continued over time.
