CDC issues new vaccine guidance for people with allergies

CDC issues new vaccine guidance for people with allergies

As of Sunday, the CDC had counted six serious allergic reactions to the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, the first vaccine authorized in the US. The first shots were administered last week. Of the six reports, one person had a history of vaccine reactions.

Over the weekend, the CDC issued new recommendations for those with a history of allergies. The  agency suggests that people who have ever had a severe allergic reaction, also known as anaphylaxis, to any ingredient in a Covid-19 vaccine should not get that vaccine. The agency added that people with a history of anaphylaxis to other vaccines or injectable medications should consult their doctor on getting the Covid-19 vaccine.

If an individual does experience anaphylaxis after the initial Covid-19 shot, the CDC says they should not get the second shot.

The National Institutes of Health is planning a study to investigate these rare instances of severe allergic reactions to Covid-19 vaccines.
