CDC issues new vaccine guidance
for people with allergies |
As of
Sunday, the CDC had counted six serious allergic reactions to the
Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, the first vaccine authorized in the US. The
first shots were administered last week. Of the six reports, one person had a
history of vaccine reactions. Over
the weekend, the CDC issued new recommendations
for those with a history of allergies. The agency suggests that people
who have ever had a severe allergic reaction, also known as anaphylaxis, to
any ingredient in a Covid-19 vaccine should not get that vaccine. The agency
added that people with a history of anaphylaxis to other vaccines or
injectable medications should consult their doctor on getting the Covid-19
vaccine. If an
individual does experience anaphylaxis after the initial Covid-19 shot, the
CDC says they should not get the second shot. The
National Institutes of Health is planning a study to investigate these rare
instances of severe allergic reactions to Covid-19 vaccines. |
