Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the FFY 2019 Medicaid and CHIP Statistical Enrollment Data System (SEDS) Table that shows the number of children ever enrolled in the programs during FFY 2019. SEDS enrollment data are released annually.

The data released today shows that overall children’s enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP declined by 730,097 children between FFY 2018 and FFY 2019, a decrease of 1.6 percent.  In addition, 752,616 fewer children were enrolled in Medicaid in FFY 2019 compared to FFY 2018, a decrease of 2.1 percent.  In contrast, children’s enrollment in CHIP increased by 22,519 children between FFY 2018 and FFY 2019, an increase of 0.2 percent.  Of note, while the SEDS data show an overall decrease in children’s enrollment in Medicaid and CHIP between FY 2018 and FY 2019, we expect a different trend in the FY 2020 enrollment data due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.  The SEDS FFY 2020 enrollment data should be published in Spring 2021.
