CDC: Over 81,000 died from drug overdose in 12 months
The number of deaths in the US caused by drug overdose rose to
81,230 in the 12-month period that ended May 2020, up 18.2% compared with the
12-month period ending in June 2019, according to a Health
Alert Network advisory from the CDC. The spike seemed to be driven
by deaths related to the use of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and the
largest increase was recorded during the period from March to May 2020 -- after
the start of the COVID-19 public health emergency -- the agency said.
