The Science of Why We Like the Music We Do

Do you find yourself drawn to the same type of music you listened to as a teenager? Or musical artists that seem to have similar personalities to yours? It turns out there’s a whole science behind why we like the songs and genres we do.

Researchers have found that in addition to a preference for music from adolescent years, many peoples’ tastes can be linked to certain personality traits — both their own and that of the artist. For example, extroverts tend to prefer upbeat music, while those who cite “openness” as a trait turn to more sophisticated genres.

Beyond the music itself, the artist behind the tunes is also important. “The match between the [personality of the] listener and the artist was predictive of the musical preferences for the artist beyond just the attributes from the music,” researcher David M. Greenberg told The Washington Post.

Of course, there are a range of other things that factor into music taste as well, including age, gender, and region. Next time you go to put on your favorite playlist, consider thinking a bit harder about why you like what you do — you might just discover something about your personality in the process.
