Breast cancer most commonly diagnosed cancer
worldwide
Female breast cancer made up 11.7% of 19.3 million new cancer
cases in 2020 and has overtaken lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed
cancer globally, but lung cancer, which accounted for 18% of 10 million cancer
deaths, continued to be the top cause of cancer-related mortality, according to
a report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The IARC
attributed rising breast cancer diagnoses to significant lifestyle, built
environment and sociocultural context changes in various countries, and the
findings should prompt increased focus on cancer detection and prevention, IARC
Director Dr. Elisabete Weiderpass said.
