Experts: Standardized data helps spot health
disparities

Health care providers and health information managers must have
access to clean and standardized data if they are to identify and address the
underlying causes of health disparities, say John Van Reenen, a member of the
MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future, and Laurie Zephyrin, the Commonwealth
Fund's vice president of delivery system reform. EHR fields for capturing data
like sexual orientation help standardize data collection, but data collection
methods should also be standardized, Zephyrin says, and critical staff members
should be involved with standardization initiatives from the beginning, Van
Reenen says.
