Fauci: New variants could worsen US COVID-19
situation
The number of COVID-19 cases in the US has declined to around
150,000 per day, down from a daily peak of more than 200,000, but National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci warned that
the country's COVID-19 situation could possibly get worse due to the emergence
of more contagious variants, including the variant first identified in the UK,
which has been found in at least 28 states, and the variant first identified in
South Africa, which was recently detected in South Carolina. The US has
recorded more than 80,000 COVID-19 fatalities so far this month, making January
the deadliest month since the pandemic started.
