Negative stories about nursing homes during the novel coronavirus
pandemic take attention away from older adults who are living at home and
making do, and public health warnings to check on older adults ignore what they
themselves can offer society at large, says Sally Chivers, a professor at Trent
University who teaches about issues such as aging in media and popular culture.
Chivers says prompts to check on older neighbors do not acknowledge that those
receiving the instructions also might be older, which "harnesses ageist
language to make it seem as though people between 70 and 100 are all from the
same generation, with the same needs and desires."
